The real reason 3-putts happen

Dec 29, 2025

Most golfers think they 3-putt because of speed.
That’s rarely the full story.

This came up twice in lessons this week. Players were convinced distance control was the issue, but when we looked closer, the ball wasn’t even starting where they thought it was.

Once we cleaned up start line, speed became easier — almost automatically.

Here’s the shift I want you to make:

  • Stop obsessing over feel

  • Start paying attention to where the ball starts

  • Let speed become a response, not a guess

Try this:
Set up a simple start-line gate from 5–6 feet and roll 10 putts focusing only on start line — don’t worry about pace.

If you want help building predictable putting, we can work through this step-by-step inside Fairway Finder Community. You can also reply and tell me what your most common miss is.

Most improvement doesn’t happen all at once.It compounds quietly. I’ve seen the biggest changes in players who stopped bouncing between fixes and instead committed to one clear focus over time.
