How To Turn Your “Scary” Tee Shot Into A Predictable Fairway Finder
You don’t have to love your driver. But you do need a tee shot you can trust.
If you’re standing on the first tee already worried about where the ball might end up, it’s hard to let the rest of your game shine. That’s why I tell my players to stop chasing the “perfect” drive and start looking for something predictable.
Better players don’t hit every drive perfectly. What they do know is their typical shot shape, where their usual miss tends to go, and how to choose a target that gives that pattern room.
And you don’t need a brand-new swing to figure that out.
One of my favorite ways to find your pattern is a simple 10-ball test. The next time you’re at the range, grab your driver or 3-wood and choose a clear “fairway” target between two reference points. Go through your full routine and hit 10 balls as if each one matters.
Then take a look at what actually happened.
Did most start left, right, or on your target? Where did your playable misses tend to go? And which side would have brought the biggest trouble into play?
That’s your real tee-shot pattern—not necessarily the one you have in your head.
This week, try using that information on the course. Give yourself a little more space on your typical miss side, and don’t automatically aim down the middle if your shots rarely finish there.
It sounds simple, but you’ll be surprised how much easier the game feels when you start playing with the swing you actually have instead of the one you’re hoping for.
If you want to work on this more, I’ve built a Drills Library with specific driver and fairway-wood drills to help you map your shot pattern, add a little pressure to your range sessions, and build a “default” tee shot you can trust on those tighter holes.

Pick one or two drills and stick with them for a few weeks. Your heart rate on the first tee might just thank you.
